BIM and parametric structural workflows
Explore structural BIM coordination, model exchange, parametric design and traceable engineering information.
Identify the purpose of each model
An analytical model, a coordination model and a fabrication model may represent the same structure for different purposes. Explain which model you are discussing and which information must survive an exchange. Geometry alone does not describe engineering intent.
Make changes traceable
For BIM and parametric workflows, describe how object identifiers, parameters, units and revisions are handled. Name the tools and exchange formats, then explain the specific mapping or coordination problem. Useful topics include analytical alignment, section-property mapping, model comparison and the review of generated geometry.
Discuss the review loop
A productive workflow includes a way to compare the generated or exchanged information against the intended structure. Share how changes are reported, who reviews them and how an approved revision is recorded. This makes conversations about Revit, IFC, Dynamo, Grasshopper and analysis-tool integrations more useful than software screenshots alone.
Questions to bring to the community
- Which information is lost during your model exchange?
- How do you identify a changed structural object across revisions?
- Where should engineering review occur in a parametric workflow?
